WCF : What is in the name?

WCF or Windows Communication Foundation came as part of .Net 3.0 framework. It is Microsoft platform to build Service Oriented Applications(SOA). Using WCF , one can provide services that are interoperable.Interoperable here means can be used across any platform. That is , a service made using WCF can be consumed by any OS, not only WINDOWS.

Before WCF , there was something called as WEB SERVICES . But if you need to build a service , first thing you need to look is whether you want a asmx , or remoting or enterprise component and these three were entirely diffrent technologies .

Using WCF programming model , one can build very easily , flexible Services.
